Here's how thousands of volunteers make that happen every year. What Do Volunteers Actually Do? Float decorating volunteers work under the guidance of professional crew chiefs to apply natural materials to float surfaces. No experience is necessary - you'll be taught every technique on the spot. Rose Parade rules require that every surface of a float visible to spectators must be covered in organic materials - flowers, seeds, bark, leaves, or other plant-based materials. This makes decorating a massive undertaking that requires thousands of volunteer hours. Artistic Entertainment Services has been coordinating this effort for over 40 years, welcoming volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to be part of this incredible tradition. Materials Used in Float Decorating Fresh Flowers Roses, orchids, chrysanthemums, and hundreds of other varieties are applied petal by petal to cover float surfaces. Seeds & Grains Lentils, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and rice are glued individually to create detailed textures and patterns. Bark & Wood Crushed bark, coconut fiber, and ground walnut shells provide natural brown tones for tree trunks and earth elements. Dried Materials Dried flowers, statice, strawflower, and other preserved botanicals add vibrant color that lasts through parade day. DECORATING WEEK The Decorating Timeline 1 December 26 Dry Decorating Begins Crew chiefs and experienced volunteers begin applying dry materials - seeds, bark, and dried flowers - to the float structures. 2 December 27–28 Detail Work Continues Volunteers work on intricate details, lettering, character features, and specialty elements that require precision. 3 December 29–30 Fresh Flower Application Thousands of fresh flowers arrive. Volunteers help cut, prepare, and apply fresh blooms to the float surfaces. 4 December 31 Final Touches Last-minute details, touch-ups, and finishing work. The floats are prepared for judging and the parade on New Year's Day. 5 January 1 Rose Parade Day The floats roll down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena for the Tournament of Roses Parade, seen by millions worldwide.
